The Place That Takes It

Most recyclers take the easy things. We built a yard around the ones nobody else wants — and 25+ years of combined experience figuring out how.

What actually happens to your mattress

People assume a recycling fee is a disposal fee. It isn't. Here's the whole process for one mattress:

We dismantle it by hand. The steel springs, the foam, the fibre and the fabric all get separated and sorted by type. Each material is stored until there's enough of it to bale. Then it's baled, and the bales are stored until there's enough to fill a truck. Then it's shipped to the specific facility that uses that specific material in manufacturing.

Steel goes back into steel. Foam becomes carpet underlay. The whole thing gets used again instead of sitting in a landfill for the next several decades — a mattress is mostly air and springs, so it takes up far more space than its weight suggests.

That's what the $50 pays for. Not a hole in the ground — a person with a pair of pliers and somewhere for every piece to go.

We take the hard things

Mattresses and box springs. Couches and sectionals. Refrigerators, freezers and AC units. TVs. Large appliances. The stuff that gets turned away everywhere else, all at one address.

Refrigerant, legally

Anything with refrigerant in it has to be recovered by someone certified before it can be scrapped. That's a licensing question, not a preference — which is why most electronics recyclers can't take your fridge. We can.

Prices on the wall

Every price we charge is published on this site. No "call for a quote" on a mattress, no surprise at the counter. If it isn't listed, text us a photo and we'll tell you before you load it.

Why we don't take plastic and glass

Because someone else already does it better. Curbside programs handle bottles and jars at a scale a yard our size can't match, usually for a few dollars a month.

What they don't handle is the king mattress in your garage, the chest freezer in the basement, or the 65-inch TV that stopped working. So that's where we put our equipment, our floor space, and our time. We'd rather be the place that takes what nobody else will than one more place that takes cardboard.

One trip instead of three

Clearing out a house normally means the electronics place, the mattress place and the dump — three drives, three sets of hours, three ways to get it wrong.

Everything on our list goes in one load, to one address, on one afternoon. And if you'd rather not load it at all, we'll come and get it for a flat $65 inside Colorado Springs.

Firewood, too

Our affiliate Urban Firewood Co handles above-ground tree material and sells seasoned firewood — hardwoods, softwoods, specialty woods and mulch, with delivery. We keep piñon pine in stock at the Cascade Avenue yard. More on that here.
